Abstract
AAPOR members’ growing interest in and use of qualitative research is evidenced by: the increasing use of qualitative methods among survey researchers as well as new qualitative experts brought into the research team; members’ enthusiastic response to the nascent AAPOR affinity group QUALPOR which currently has more than 80 members; as well as the well-attended, first-ever qualitative panel track, consisting of five consecutive paper sessions, at the 2019 AAPOR conference in Toronto. At the 2020 AAPOR virtual conference, three qualitative paper sessions are being held. One of these panel sessions is on the subject of – Mixed Methods and Alternative Solutions. Mixed methods research uses the combined strengths of both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate a research question. Alternative solutions may involve creative techniques. This panel session consists of four presentations. Steigelman reports on the qualitative and quantitative approaches Pew has used in its ongoing student loan research to navigate the sensitive and complex issue of student loan repayment. Dandapani presents the findings from Canada's largest syndicated study of Canadian cannabis consumers along with qualitative in-depth interviews with business leaders to talk about brand growth since Canada’s cannabis legalization. Kocar discusses the 25 in-depth interviews that were conducted to identify the main motivation factors, determents, and barriers in all stages of the online panel survey research lifecycle. Brown uses participatory research and collaborative elements to research the lived experience of chronically ill and/or disabled academics and will discuss the difficulties and less successful aspects of these methods.
